Opening Day Success
Oldham Athletic (Latics) began the 2026/27 campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Port Vale. The win, achieved on the first away day, gave the Latics a strong start and a boost of confidence. Mellon’s Call for Support
Mellon stressed that the early success must be followed by continued effort. "It’s always important to try to win games at any stage of the season," he said. He added that the 45‑minute grind of the season means teams must keep pushing from the start. "We know we can still get better, but to get a result against one of the fancied teams early on in the league and in front of a big crowd at home is a good start for us," Mellon told reporters.
He urged Oldham’s supporters to turn their enthusiasm toward Colchester United, who will face the Latics at the JobServe Stadium at 3pm. "When you speak about how tough things are at the minute, financially, to have that kind of support is terrific," he said. "We’re really pleased that they’re going to support us now it’s up to us to go down there, with them, the supporters and the players and make sure that we’re a force and we go down there and we try and fight for another valuable result."
Ticket Sales and Atmosphere
More than 700 tickets have already been sold for the trip to the JobServe Stadium, a figure Mellon described as an "incredible effort again." He praised the club’s fans for their vocal and numerical backing, noting that supporters are the heart of football. "Supporters are what football’s all about. Without supporters, what is football? So when you have a support that gets right behind you, both in numbers and vocally, it obviously makes a huge difference," he added.
