Former Colchester United forward Matt Jay has taken on the role of Head of Football Development at Torquay United. He will manage youth programmes and coaching pathways, and has also agreed to continue as a player for the National League South side.
Jay will collaborate with South Devon College to aid its under-18 and under-19 programmes, assisting young players in moving towards senior football at Torquay. His responsibilities involve creating a professional development scheme for the club's youth coaches and aligning the entire youth system with the first team's playing style.
Jay's playing contract extended
Alongside this new off-field position, Jay has pledged his future as a Torquay player. He has signed a contract extension, securing his place in the first-team squad. Jay moved to Torquay from Colchester and has since featured in numerous league and cup matches for the club.
Jay's Colchester United background
Matt Jay previously played for Colchester United, having joined them from Exeter City. He featured for Colchester before his contract was ended by mutual agreement prior to his switch to Torquay. His exit occurred as the club was undergoing changes.
The club's next match is a home game against Exeter City this Saturday. Check the full schedule on our fixtures page.
Torquay's vision for the appointments
Torquay United said these appointments enhance the route from local football to the senior team and foster a more cohesive strategy across all levels. Co-chairman Michael Westcott called the moves significant for the club's growth. "It's the next pieces of the jigsaw puzzle," Westcott stated, reflecting views Jay also expressed about the new setup. This position marks Jay's initial official move into coaching following his time as a player at Colchester.
