Colchester United's search for a win continues after a third consecutive home draw, this time a 0-0 stalemate with Exeter City. The result extends their winless run in League Two to seven matches, leaving them 19th in the table with 10 points from nine games, a record of two wins, four draws and three losses. They have scored 10 goals and conceded 13 this season.
Danny Cowley made two enforced changes, bringing in Frankie Terry and Bradley Ihionvien for the injured Jack Payne and Harry Anderson. The absence of Payne, the club's top scorer this season with 13 goals in 39 appearances, was a significant blow. The hosts started brightly and thought they had taken the lead when Ihionvien headed home Oscar Thorn's cross, only for the offside flag to cut the celebrations short. Exeter's best early chance saw Josh Gordon force a smart near-post save from Thimothee Lo-Tutala.
Colchester created the clearer openings after the break. Just minutes into the second half, Jack Tucker's powerful strike cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled clear. Oscar Thorn then saw a dipping volley fly over from the edge of the box, and Bradley Ihionvien was denied by a strong save from Exeter keeper Jack Bycroft after connecting with Ellis Iandolo's low delivery.
Despite enjoying 52% possession and registering 18 shots, only two were on target. The U's were also frustrated by a disciplined Exeter defence, with Jack Fitzwater making a key headed clearance early on. Cowley introduced Kane Vincent-Young and Kien Connolly in the 74th minute in search of a winner, but a breakthrough never came.
Jay Williams and Beryly Lubala were booked for Colchester, while Exeter's Jack Fitzwater and Charlie Cummins also saw yellow. The attendance at the Jobserve Community Stadium was 4,984, with 397 travelling supporters.
The point does little to ease Colchester's concerns near the bottom of the table. They remain 19th, nine points adrift of leaders Salford City and with a goal difference of minus three. Their recent form shows no wins in five, with three draws and two losses, following results against Newport County, Luton, Shrewsbury and Peterborough.
Focus now shifts immediately to a tough away trip. Colchester travel to face seventh-placed Chesterfield on Tuesday 20 October. That match kicks off at 19:45 and is the next fixture on the club's fixtures schedule.
