Former Colchester United manager Matt Bloomfield is an early candidate for the vacant manager's job at League One club Peterborough United. Peterborough sacked Luke Williams at the weekend, creating the opening.

The 42-year-old Bloomfield managed Colchester for 27 matches between 2022 and February 2023, winning nine, drawing six and losing twelve. He left the club to take charge of Wycombe Wanderers and most recently departed Oxford United in June.

Peterborough United confirmed Williams' exit in a statement. "Peterborough United Football Club has today parted company with First Team Manager Luke Williams," the club said. They added, "On behalf of everyone at the Football Club, we would like to place on record our thanks to Luke for all his efforts during his time at the Weston Homes Stadium."

Karl Robinson, dismissed by Salford City in June, is currently seen as the frontrunner for the position. Other names linked with the job include Michael Duff and Neil Harris. Bloomfield's connection to the role reflects ongoing interest in his coaching profile.

Colchester, meanwhile, are focused on their own campaign under current management. The U's sit 15th in League Two with nine points from seven games, having drawn their last two matches 1-1 against Cheltenham and Crewe. Their recent form reads one win, two draws and two defeats from the last five. Danny Cowley's side have a goal difference of minus 1, and their next challenge is an away trip to face 18th-placed Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Danny Cowley is now the man tasked with guiding Colchester forward and has indicated he will give the club's younger players opportunities. For more details on the players he has at his disposal, visit the squad page.

Bloomfield's potential move to a League One club would mark a swift return to management at a higher level.
