Colchester United legend Karl Duguid has taken a new coaching role at Brightlingsea Regent. The former midfielder, who made over 450 league and cup appearances across two spells with the U's, will join the backroom staff at the Pitching In Isthmian League North club.
Brightlingsea Regent announced the appointment on Monday. "We are delighted to announce that Colchester United Legend Karl Duguid has joined the club to link up with Ryan Salter's back room staff!" the club said.
Duguid retired from playing in 2015 and has since built his coaching experience at several Essex non-league sides, including Heybridge Swifts, Stanway Rovers, and Coggeshall Town. He spent the last two seasons as a coach at National League side Braintree Town. His new role sees him reunite with Salter, with whom he formed a strong working relationship over the past year and at the Sigma academy.
Duguid brings a wealth of local football knowledge and a decorated playing career. Earlier this summer, he was part of the England Veterans squad that won the Seniors World Cup. His first match in the Brightlingsea Regent dugout will be this Saturday, when the team hosts Takeley after a two-week break from league action.
While Duguid begins his new chapter, his former club Colchester United are handling their own season in League Two. The U's currently sit 13th in the table with 8 points from their opening six matches. Their recent form shows two wins, one draw, and two defeats from the last five games, a sequence that includes a 1-1 home draw with Crewe Alexandra last weekend.
Duguid's move continues a trend of former Colchester players remaining involved in the Essex football scene, applying their experience to help develop the next generation of talent at local clubs.
