Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway has discussed his squad's depth and the challenge of facing Colchester United, who are still looking for their first away win of the season. The comments come ahead of the League Two meeting on Saturday, 5th September 2026.
Colchester travel to the County Ground sitting 8th in the table with 7 points from their opening four matches. Their form has been mixed, with two wins, one draw and one loss, scoring and conceding five goals each. They are just two points behind leaders Bristol Rovers in the early title race.
Ian Holloway expressed strong belief in the quality of his Swindon Town group. He stated that the talent he sees daily is above the level expected for the club's current standing. "I've been in football a long, long time and what I'm seeing day in, day out is a level above where we should be now," Holloway said. He highlighted the impact of young players who have raised the team's effort and fearlessness.
Holloway pointed to specific players like Louis, who he gave a new contract to, as examples of the commitment he values. He contrasted this with another player, Botan, who felt he would be better elsewhere last year. The manager believes the squad is mentally tough and fully committed to improving the experience for supporters.
Injury management is a key topic for Holloway. He provided an update on Joe Snowdon, who has been dealing with two separate injuries and frustration at being held back from full training. Snowdon played 39 games for Holloway last season and was described as outstanding, playing a major part in a recent win.
The manager plans to select Snowdon and others but acknowledged some players will need to wait until next week to be fully fit for 90 minutes. He emphasised that changes to the team or shape are made with clear reasoning, often in response to the opposition, as was the case in a recent victory.
Colchester's form presents a specific challenge for Swindon. The U's are yet to win away from home this season, but historically have a decent record against Swindon, having lost just two of the last eight meetings between the sides. Their most recent result was a 2-2 draw away at Accrington Stanley on the 15th of August.
Looking at their last five matches in all competitions, Colchester's form reads two wins, one draw and two losses (DWWLL). This inconsistency on the road is something Swindon will look to exploit.
Holloway's outlook is ambitious but grounded. He cannot guarantee results but is confident fans will see value in the team's fight. He referenced the atmosphere at games and called for a positive attitude from supporters. "I think we need to win another 25. So let's see what we can do," he added, setting a clear target for the campaign.
The manager believes the group has the talent and ambition to move forward and become a truly connected community club. After a disappointing loss last Saturday, he took pleasure in the team's quick response in their next match. Swindon Town, currently 9th, host Colchester United at the County Ground on Saturday, 5th September 2026.
