Colchester United's unbeaten start to the League Two season ended with a 2-0 defeat away to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night. The loss came on a day of significant movement for the club, with striker Samson Tovide's permanent departure to Huddersfield Town confirmed and former loan defender Josh Powell securing a new loan switch to Northampton Town.

Colchester United suffered their first defeat of the new campaign at the Memorial Stadium, according to a match report from the Gazette & Essex County Standard. Goals from Tom James in the 27th minute and a stoppage-time tap-in from substitute Ellis Harrison sealed the win for a Bristol Rovers side that had not lost a home league game since February. The U's thought they had equalised through Ellis Iandolo's header, but it was ruled out for a foul.

Danny Cowley made three changes to his starting lineup, handing a first league start since April to Jaden Williams. The visitors had chances, with Moses Sesay and Iandolo seeing efforts blocked late on, but they could not find a way past goalkeeper Brad Young. The result leaves Colchester eighth in the table with seven points from four games, two points behind leaders Bristol Rovers.

Striker Samson Tovide has joined Huddersfield Town, Colchester United's official website confirmed. The 22-year-old forward's contract with the U's expired earlier this summer, and he has moved to the West Yorkshire club for an undisclosed fee, understood to involve age-related compensation. Tovide progressed through the academy at Florence Park and made 151 senior appearances for Colchester, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists.

Head Coach Danny Cowley wished the player well for the future. "I wish Samson nothing but success moving forward," Cowley told reporters. Tovide's departure comes as Colchester have scored five goals and conceded five in their opening four league matches, leaving them with a neutral goal difference. Former Colchester United loanee Josh Powell has signed for Northampton Town on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest. The 21-year-old left-back spent the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan with the U's, making 14 appearances in all competitions after joining in August 2025.

Northampton boss Chris Hogg told his club's website that Powell would provide depth and competition in defence. "Josh has experience of this level," Hogg said. "He is a player who can play at full back or across the back line." Powell made six league starts for Colchester before his opportunities reduced following Iandolo's return to fitness in October. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Attention now turns to Colchester's next fixture as they look to bounce back from this defeat. The team's recent form reads LWWD across their first four matches. The squad will regroup ahead of that match, with new signing Kylian Kouassi having been an unused substitute in Bristol.
