Colchester United have announced the death of former director John Worsp. The club confirmed the news on September 24, expressing sadness at the loss of a long-serving figure.
Worsp, who first began following the club in 1950, was appointed to the board in December 1992. He served as a director under former chairman Peter Heard and later became an executive director before resigning in June 2009. "We are saddened to report the news that John Worsp has passed away," the club said in a statement. "Our thoughts at this sad time are with John’s wife Jackie, his family and all his friends."
He played a significant role in club governance and community projects, most notably helping to establish the Vice President's Club at the old Layer Road ground. Worsp also spoke publicly about the appointment of Phil Parkinson as manager in 2003, a move that ultimately led Colchester to promotion to the Championship.
The news comes as the current team seeks consistency in League Two. Colchester sit 15th in the table with 10 points from eight games, having drawn three and lost two of their last five matches. The team will be looking to improve on a recent run of form that has seen them pick up just three points from a possible fifteen.
John Worsp's passing marks the end of an era for a club he supported for over seven decades.
