Jack Payne is preparing to make his 100th appearance for Colchester United this weekend, a milestone that underlines his commitment to the club. The 31-year-old midfielder has become a central figure since joining in 2024 and wants to extend his stay at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Payne, who has scored 13 goals in 39 appearances this season, is the club's top scorer. His form was instrumental last term, earning him the player of the season award and a place in the EFL League Two Team of the Year as Colchester secured their Football League status.

This will be the first time in his career that Payne has reached 100 games for a single club. His journey has included spells at Southend United, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Swindon Town, and Charlton Athletic, along with several loan moves.

"It's the first time I've actually played 100 games for one club," Payne said. "It shouldn't have taken this long, but I'm really glad to reach the 100 mark."

He added, "I really enjoy myself here, and I want to make that many more."

Manager Danny Cowley confirmed the club turned down bids for Payne during the summer transfer window. The player himself was clear about his intentions, stating he was always going to stay and hopes to be at Colchester for many more seasons.

"I've moved more often than I would have liked over the years for various different reasons," Payne explained. "I've felt settled here and hopefully I can be here for many more seasons."

His importance is reflected in the numbers: 22 goals and 18 assists across his 99 games so far. While he hasn't registered a goal involvement in the last five matches, he remains confident. "I never worry about those things as I know as long as I'm available and I'm playing goals and assists will come," he said.

Colchester currently sit 13th in League Two with 8 points from six games. Payne's milestone appearance is set to come in the next fixture, a home match against fourth-placed Cheltenham on Saturday.
