Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley has confirmed the club made a late push to sign a quick attacker before the transfer deadline passed. The U's boss described the summer window as the most difficult of his managerial career, despite securing two signings on the final day.

Cowley made the comments this week. The club currently sits 12th in the League Two standings, having taken seven points from their opening five matches with a record of two wins, one draw, and two losses. Their recent form reads LLWWD, and they have scored six goals while conceding eight, leaving them with a minus-two goal difference.

Colchester United worked until the final moments of the transfer window to strengthen their squad. The primary objective was to add more pace and threat in the final third. Danny Cowley stated the club would have liked to bring in another quick attacking player, but a deal could not be completed before the deadline slammed shut.

"We’d have liked to have added another quick attacking player but it just wasn’t possible," Cowley said. The head coach believes improving the team's attacking output requires more speed, better quality of delivery into the box, and a stronger physical presence in the penalty area. These were the key attributes they sought in the market.

The club did manage to complete two pieces of business on deadline day. Forward Kylian Kouassi arrived from Blackpool, adding a new option to the frontline. Midfielder Jay Williams was also signed from Crawley Town, bolstering the options in the centre of the park.

These additions come as Colchester aims to close a five-point gap to league leaders Bristol Rovers. Integrating these new signings quickly will be important for Cowley as he looks to build on the team's current position. Fans can view the full roster on the club's squad page.

Danny Cowley did not hold back when assessing the difficulties of the summer market. He called it a profoundly tough period for the club and for himself personally.

"It was a really difficult window for us, probably the toughest of my managerial career, for many reasons," Cowley explained. The complexities of deals, financial constraints, and competition for targets all contributed to the challenging environment. This context makes the acquisition of Kouassi and Williams notable successes within a constrained framework.

The failure to land the desired pacy attacker leaves a clear item on the club's agenda, likely to be revisited in the January window. For now, Cowley must work with the players at his disposal to find the attacking improvements he wants. The team has shown resilience already this season, coming from behind twice to earn a draw against Peterborough United.

However, they also suffered a defeat to Swindon Town in a match where defender Kane Vincent-Young was absent. The upcoming fixtures will test whether the full squad has enough firepower to sustain a push up the table. Colchester United's next match is against Newport County on September 13th.
