Colchester United are prioritizing a new goalkeeper who can thrive under League Two’s revamped time-limit laws and spearhead their fast, transition-based approach, manager Danny Cowley confirmed. The U’s ended last season 12th in League Two with 66 points (18W-12D-16L) and a +13 goal difference, finishing 21 points behind leaders Bromley. Their recent form saw them win two of their last five matches (WWLLL), including a 4-1 victory over Cheltenham on May 2, 2026.

Following Matt Macey’s departure, Colchester are exploring options, including a potential loan deal. Jojo Wollacott, formerly of Swindon Town, is currently on trial. Cowley stressed the need for a keeper who can quickly distribute the ball to trigger counter-attacks, aligning with the club’s high-tempo style. The new laws limit goalkeepers to eight seconds to release the ball after a save, with referees visibly counting down the final five seconds. A corner is awarded if the keeper exceeds the limit, replacing the previous indirect free-kick sanction.

Cowley highlighted that 86% of goals in League Two last season came from transitions or set pieces, underscoring the importance of quick play. The reduced window for goal-kicks further emphasizes the need for speed. "We want to play the game transitionally; we love the game being played fast," Cowley said. "We want to think forward, play forward, run forward."

The focus remains on finding a goalkeeper who can enhance their defensive transitions and set-piece efficiency. "If you can be really good defensively at stopping transition and defending set pieces, and offensively at counter-attacking and being ruthless with attacking transitions, then you’ll do well in League Two," Cowley added.
