Colchester United are targeting a summer move for former Ipswich Town attacking midfielder Ross Crane, currently at King’s Lynn Town. The 23-year-old, who can also play as a winger, made 23 goal contributions in the National League North last season.

Who is Ross Crane?

Crane began his career at Colchester’s academy before moving to AFC Sudbury. He later joined Bury Town in 2019 and signed a two-year professional contract with Ipswich Town. He made two EFL Trophy appearances for the Tractor Boys and had loan spells at Concord Rangers and Bury Town. After leaving Ipswich, he played for Needham Market and Leiston before joining King’s Lynn in 2022.

Why is Colchester interested?

Colchester boss Danny Cowley is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the new League Two season. The U’s finished 12th last season with 66 points, 18 wins, 12 draws, and 16 losses. They scored 62 goals and conceded 49, finishing 21 points behind leaders Bromley. Crane’s versatility and goal contributions make him an attractive option.

What’s next for Colchester?

Colchester will play their first pre-season game on July 15 against Norwich City in a behind-closed-doors match. The U’s are also linked with other players as they aim to improve their squad for the upcoming campaign. Their recent form shows two wins in the last five games, including a 4-1 victory over Cheltenham on May 2, 2026.
