Colchester United has lost another talented young defender, as Frankie Edwards joins Hornchurch on a permanent deal. The 20-year-old centre-back had been in contract discussions with the U's following the expiry of his previous deal, but has opted to return to Hornchurch, where he spent much of the 2025/26 campaign on loan.
What happened?
Edwards made 33 appearances at Hornchurch last season and has now returned on a permanent basis. Hornchurch manager Daryl McMahon told the club's website: "Firstly and foremost Frankie was terrific when he came on loan to us last season. As a young player, coming into a team that won promotion and had 33 appearances is a credit to him. We believe he has a big future in the game and we're delighted that he's decided to join us."

Edwards joins fellow former Colchester defenders Jack Baldwin, Tom Dallison, Will Greenidge and Ryan Inniss at Hornchurch.
Edwards is a centre-back who is aerially very dominant, fantastic on the ball and reads the game well. Hornchurch are looking forward to helping him develop the potential he has got. The club has a strong squad and with Edwards on board, they will be hoping to make a strong push for promotion this season.
