Anthony Scully scored the winning goal on his Exeter City debut just hours after signing a contract until the end of the season, securing a 1-0 League Two victory over Rotherham United. The 27-year-old striker, who left Colchester United in the summer, was named in the starting lineup and rewarded his new manager's faith with a decisive second-half strike. The goal ended a damaging run for Exeter, who had failed to score in their previous four league games and began the day just a point above the relegation zone in the standings.
Scully described the moment as one of the best feelings of his life. "That feeling when I scored is up there, it's one of the best feelings I've had in my life," he said.
Colchester connection
Scully's move to Devon follows two loan spells at Colchester United's JobServe Community Stadium during the 2024/25 campaign. He made 18 appearances for the U's, playing 15 times in League Two under then-manager Danny Cowley, contributing to the team's stats with his attacking play. His departure came after a summer spent unattached following the expiry of his contract at Shrewsbury Town, where he scored five goals in 35 matches last season. Colchester, who currently sit 19th in League Two with 10 points from eight games, have a chance to improve their position in their next fixtures.
Taylor's vision
Exeter head coach Matt Taylor praised the new signing's immediate impact and pedigree. Taylor stated. Taylor also confirmed the club had been monitoring Scully for some time and were delighted to secure his signature, believing his versatility across the front line will be a major asset.
The victory provides a key boost for Exeter's campaign. For Colchester, the focus shifts to their next fixture. John McGreal's side travel to face 15th-placed Newport County on Saturday, looking to improve on a recent run of four draws and one loss in their last five outings.
